F.A.Q.'s
About Dutch Oven Outfitters &
The Chicory House BnB

1. Do I need any prior cooking experience to attend?
You do need to know some basics as this is not a culinary school. We do share recipes, and tips and will walk you through combining ingredients. Whether you're a seasoned camp cook or you’ve only ever boiled water, this class is for you.
We’ll walk you through everything—from seasoning your cast iron to mastering the perfect Dutch Oven meal. No prior Cast Iron experience is needed, just a willingness to learn (and maybe get a little sooty).

2. What should I bring with me?
A good attitude, a hearty appetite, and clothes you don’t mind smelling like campfire smoke.
We provide all the Dutch ovens, ingredients, and tools.
A full packing list will be sent before your class, but plan on bringing sturdy shoes. No sandals are allowed while in class. Layers for unpredictable Montana weather, and maybe some stretchy pants (trust me, the food is that good).

3. What kind of food will we be cooking?
Think warm, buttery biscuits, slow-cooked meats, campfire cobblers, and homemade bread baked in cast iron. You’ll learn to cook everything from breakfast scrambles to full-blown 5-star meals—all with a Dutch Oven!

4. Is lodging included?

2, and 4-day Classes.
Yes, you will be staying in our home share, The Chicory House BnB with all the amenities

10-Day Class -
You'll be staying on our property at
The Chicory House BnB in a Wall Tent in
Paradise Valley, Montana—just 38 miles north of Yellowstone National Park.
Cots are provided, and mountain views are all part of the package.
This is the owner's property so you will be sharing a port-a-potty (as outhouses are in the backcountry) with other students.

5. Can I explore Yellowstone while I’m there?
Absolutely! Our schedule includes built-in free time, so you can take a scenic drive, go hiking, or even spot some wildlife. And if you need help planning your adventure, I’ve got plenty of tips on the best spots to visit, where to eat, and how to avoid the tourist traffic jams.

6. What happens if the weather is bad?
If you are in the 2 and 4-day classes we will move the class indoors to our primitive kitchen area.
If you are attending the 10-day class. Well, welcome to Montana—where you can experience all four seasons in one day! Our day does not stop due to the weather. We work right through it all.

7. What’s the difference between your beginner, intermediate, and advanced classes?
-
Beginner (2-Day Class): Learn the basics—seasoning, heat control, and simple meals.
-
Intermediate (4-Day Class): Go beyond the basics with more challenging dishes, cooking for crowds, and advanced heat management.
-
Advanced (10-Day Class): This is the real deal—learn to cook in a backcountry setting, master meal planning, and become the ultimate Dutch Oven cook.
8. Will I get a certificate at the end of the course?
You bet! After completing your class, you’ll receive a Certification of Completion—proof that you can cook up a feast in the wild like a pro.

9. Can I bring my own cast iron?
Of course! If you’ve got a Dutch oven or cast iron skillet that needs some love, bring it along! We’ll show you how to restore, season, and cook with it like a pro.

10. How do I sign up?
Easy! Just shoot me an email at dutchovenoutfitters@gmail.com or call/text me at 406-404-9411. If you're not sure which class is right for you, reach out—I’d love to help you find the perfect fit!

But he's friendly, No.

12. Can I bring my own tent or horse/trailer?
Yes, But you have to show proof of Coggins and vaccinations on your horse. You can pop a tent up on our property also if that’s what you prefer or if you have living quarters in your trailer, that’s fine too. Just make sure you communicate all this to Sheila before and get it authorized ahead of time.

No and absolutely NOT! If you need to smoke, please do so away from our class settings. If drugs or alcohol are present you will be asked to leave with no refund. This class is NOT for the faint of heart.
