Welcome to Dutch Oven Outfitters—where we’re keeping cast iron cooking alive, one meal at a time! If you’ve ever wanted to master the art of cooking with cast iron, learn how to properly season and care for your cookware, or even explore backcountry cooking for employment, then you’re in the right place.

This summer, I’m beyond excited to open up our 2-day, 4-day, and 10-day cast iron cooking classes. These hands-on experiences will teach you everything from fire management and meal preparation to cast iron restoration and maintenance.

Whether you’re looking to impress your friends and family, gain self-sufficiency in outdoor cooking, or pursue a job as a backcountry cook, my goal is to preserve the past and empower the future with this time-honored cooking method.

I’ve been cooking with cast iron for over 30 years, and my mother, "Granny," paved the way long before that, becoming the first woman to cook in remote hunting camps around Cody, Wyoming. Together, we have over 80 years of experience, and we’re ready to share it with you!

Why Cast Iron Cooking Matters

There’s something almost magical about cast iron cookware. It’s not just about cooking—it’s about connecting to the past.

Cast iron has been used for centuries, from pioneers cooking over open fires to generations of families passing down their favorite skillets. Unlike modern cookware, cast iron improves with age, developing a natural non-stick seasoning that enhances flavor.

Learning how to properly cook with, season, and care for cast iron is a skill that lasts a lifetime. It’s also an essential skill for those working in outdoor settings like hunting camps, dude ranches, and backcountry lodges.

At Dutch Oven Outfitters, We want to show you how cast iron can transform your cooking—whether you're using it in your own backyard, over a campfire, or in the most remote corners of the country.

Why Choose Cast Iron?

If you’re wondering why you should invest time in learning cast iron cooking, here’s why:

Durability & Longevity – Cast iron can last for generations with proper care. It’s one of the most sustainable cookware options available.

Unmatched Flavor – Cast iron develops a natural seasoning that enhances the flavor of everything you cook.

Versatility – You can use cast iron skillets, griddles, and Dutch ovens on a stovetop, campfire, grill, or even in the oven.

Self-Sufficiency – Knowing how to cook with cast iron means you can prepare meals anywhere, even off-grid.

Job Opportunities – Outfitters, ranches, and hunting camps need skilled camp cooks. Mastering cast iron opens up exciting employment possibilities.

The Importance of Preserving Cast Iron Cooking

For me, cast iron cooking is more than just a skill—it’s a legacy. My mother, "Granny," was a pioneer in backcountry camp cooking, working in some of the most remote locations in the lower 48 states. Her knowledge, along with my 30+ years of experience, makes me uniquely qualified to pass down these traditions.

We want to keep this primitive skill alive and empower a new generation of cast iron cooks—whether that means teaching families how to cook over a campfire or helping aspiring camp cooks launch their careers.

Through Dutch Oven Outfitters, We hope to build a community of people passionate about cast iron cooking and ensure this timeless tradition never fades away.
